WEST SUSSEX FEDERATION PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION FOR THE FRONT PAGE OF THE WEST SUSSEX NEWS 2025-26

We have loved seeing members photographs gracing the front of the WSN so the Board of Trustees has agreed that this competition will become a regular event. The subject next year will be buildings in West Sussex. We will need 12 photographs appropriate for each month of the year, with the first photograph appearing in April 2024.

We need photographs in LANDSCAPE format. You may enter up to 4 photographs. This year we are only asking for digital copies.

With your entries we will need:

  • Your name and telephone number
  • The name of your WI
  • A title for each image
  • When and where each photograph was taken.

Full details will also be on the West Sussex Federation Website. Each WI member is permitted up to 4 entries. All photographs should be taken in West Sussex and entrants should indicate which month their photograph represents.

Each photograph that is used will win the owner £10. There will be a special prize for the most outstanding photograph which will be presented at the Federation Annual Meeting in October 2025.

The closing date for entries is 17th February 2025.

Proposed Federation Holidays

WSFWI trip to Lichfield, for three nights, visiting the National Memorial Arboretum and
Black Country Museum.

29th 30th and 31st April or (30th 31st April and 1st May 2025)

(Just awaiting confirmation whether it is Mon, Tues, Wed nights or Tues, Wed, Thurs)

Return travel from Chichester, Worthing, Horsham and Pease Pottage.

Staying at Best Western St George’s Hotel, Bird Street, Lichfield.

Travel 29th April to Lichfield. Visit Cathedral, Charles Darwin Museum, Garrick Theatre.

Wednesday 30st April, National Memorial Arboretum, Burton on Trent.

Thursday 31st May, Black Country Museum, Dudley.

Friday 1st May, Return to Sussex.

Accommodation: The George Hotel, Lichfield. Bed and Breakfast. Dinner on first evening

Single room: We have 10 allocated

Double or twin room: We have 15 allocated.

Trips: National Memorial Arboretum entrance free. The British site of national remembrance. The 150-acre site is a living, growing tribute remembering those who have served our country.

Option for one hour buggy/land tour £7.50pp.           Guided walk £5.50 both pre-bookable.

Café, restaurant, shop and museum.

Black Country Museum entrance £18.25. The Open Air Museum with reconstructed houses, shops and industrial buildings on a 26-acre site tells the story of the how a manufacturing power house developed in the West Midlands at the start of the Industrial Revolution.

The cost per person per double or twin room is: £362 (this includes coach travel, accommodation, breakfast each day, dinner on the first night and entry to the Black Country Museum).

The cost per person in a single room is: £505.

For the remaining two nights there are lots of restaurant choices within walking distance, although you can of course eat at the hotel.

The costs have been calculated on 40 people. Places allocated on a first come first served basis.

BELFAST AND THE CAUSEWAY COAST

SUNDAY 5TH OCTOBER 2025 - THURSDAY 9TH OCTOBER 2025

This is the proposed federation holiday for the autumn 2025.

The cost will be between £995-£1075 depending on the numbers we have i.e. if 40 or more sign up then the cost will be £995 pp. If we have 30 the cost will be £1075 pp. We do have 10 single rooms reserved however, there would be an additional supplement of £160 per person per stay for a single room.

The price includes breakfast and evening meal, flights from Gatwick airport (not transport to the airport). All coach in order to secure the flights £300 pp non-refundable deposit will be due immediately we decide that the trip is going ahead.

Travel insurance is not included.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival Check into the Hilton Belfast - conveniently located for exploring the city centre.

Day 2: Unveiling Belfast's Past & Present start the day with a Belfast City Tour, facilitated by a local guide walking tour to learn about the city's rich history and vibrant present. Explore the colourful and powerful murals that paint a vivid picture of Belfast's Troubles and the ongoing peace process. In the afternoon, delve into Belfast's maritime heritage at Titanic Belfast, a world-class visitor attraction dedicated to the ill-fated RMS Titanic.

Day 3: Exploring the Antrim Coast's Natural Wonders Take a day trip to the Causeway Coast, a scenic region known for its dramatic cliffs, rugged coastline, and geological wonders. Visit the Giant's Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and marvel at its unique formation of hexagonal basalt columns. Learn about the art of whiskey making with a tour and tasting at the Bushmills Distillery, the oldest licensed distillery in Ireland. Enjoy the breathtaking views of the Antrim Coast on your way back to Belfast.

Day 4: Unveiling Derry's History & Culture Take a day trip to Derry, also known as Londonderry, a city steeped in history and culture. Embark on a City Walking Tour to discover Derry's ancient walls, vibrant neighbourhoods, and historical landmarks. Learn about the city's tumultuous past at the Free Derry Museum, which chronicles the events of the Civil Rights Movement and the Troubles. Gain a deeper understanding of the Siege of Derry at the Siege Museum, a fascinating exploration of the city's 1689 siege.

Day 5: Departure Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your hotel before departing for Belfast International Airport for your flight home.

The accommodation Hampton by Hilton, Belfast the hotel is a half-mile from Belfast's Grand Opera House, and Ulster Hall. There is free Wi-Fi, full breakfast, a fitness centre and a 24-hour snack hub!
